Root Canal (Endodontics)

Root Canal Endodontics

When people hear the words “root canal” it often makes them cringe. This therapy has often been held in bad regard. But, it doesn’t have to be a bad experience. In fact, when treatment can be completed early on then it often isn’t a painful experience. Sometimes we can see the infection before symptoms get serious.

What is referred to as a root canal is the process of disinfecting a troubled tooth. The purpose is to save the tooth and supporting bone and tissues around it. The goal of therapy is to remove the bacteria that have led to an abscess, swelling, a “pimple” on the gums, or pain.

Teeth are hollow inside, much like our bones. This space is filled with nerve tissue (pulp) and blood vessels. Sometimes this tissue can be damaged from injury or decay leading to a bacterial infection in the tooth. Root canal therapy can be performed to clean out this space from the infecting bacteria. The space is properly disinfected and then sealed with a material to help prevent the infection from recurring. This therapy has a high success rate and help save a tooth for many more years to come.
